Syria

Iraq and Syria have experienced decades of violence through authoritarian rule, war, economic crisis, and corruption. Because atrocities in these areas are ongoing, survivors more working with this research cluster have unique experience in diasporic environments and the narration of events that many continue to endure. The Iraq & Syria SCVN project cluster will create two graphic narratives that reflect on mass violence in these two societies. One narrative will look into the life of a Yezidi woman who survived ISIS occupation and genocide in the Sinjar region in northern Iraq. The other narrative is on the survival of a Syrian man in the prison system of Bashar al-Assad’s dictatorship.
